Glencore Xstrata Takes $8.47 Billion Charge

LONDON—Glencore Xstrata PLC said Tuesday it has taken an $8.47 billion hit against the value of its assets, which contributed to a net loss in the first half of the year—its first set of results since the mining company was created through a multibillion-dollar acquisition of Anglo-Swiss miner Xstrata PLC.
